Last weekend, Paul and Kim had the privilege of attending an exclusive tour at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) Airbase in Thruxton, specially arranged for local funeral directors. It was a rare opportunity to step behind the scenes and witness the extraordinary work carried out by this life-saving charity.
From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth by the HIOWAA team. The highlight of the day? Meeting the pilot and crew who dedicate themselves to responding to emergencies across the region—often in the most challenging conditions. Their professionalism, compassion, and commitment left a lasting impression.
We were also given the chance to explore one of the charity’s helicopters up close. Standing beside such a powerful piece of equipment, knowing it plays a vital role in saving lives every day, was both humbling and inspiring.
The tour offered a deeper understanding of the logistics, training, and rapid response protocols that make HIOWAA such a critical part of our emergency services. It’s easy to take for granted the speed and precision with which they operate—but seeing it firsthand reminded us just how vital their work is.
As the charity prepares to relocate to a new, purpose-built airbase near Southampton Airport, their ability to reach patients even faster will be a game-changer for emergency care in our region.
